Hey everyone, this team was made in honor of my very strong baby boy Liam. Liam is an 8-month-old Moderate- Severe Hemophiliac- type A.
Hemophilia is a blood disorder where your body does not produce enough of a certain clotting factor to be able to clot blood like a normal person. Without these clotting factors a hemophiliac can fall and have a huge bleed, while a normal person may just get a bruise. They can also get spontaneous bleeds, or a scraped knee, may require major medical care etc.
Hemophiliacs require much more care then those without hemophilia. For example Liam recently had a surgery to remove a cyst and get circumcised. For a normal person this would be an out patient procedure but for Liam, he was in the hospital for 3 days, and had to get several doses of factor medication in order to clot.
Liam has to wear a medical ID bracelet, requires special precautions now that he is learning to crawl and walk, such as pads for his knees, elbows, and butt. Liam needs a crib tent so he wont get his limbs caught in the crib and can stop bruising due to it. I also have to have his factor medications, and medical supplies with him in case of emergencies at all times.
Liam’s Drs are already talking about placing a port in his chest and starting him on “Prophy” once he starts to walk. This is common with most moderate-severe or severe hemophiliacs. A port is kind of like a semi-permanent IV which must be monitored very closely for infections etc. “Prophy” is a factor medicine that hemophiliacs use several times a week to help prevent bleeds from happening. Which means they are getting poked several times a week to get their medicine through their port. All of which costs a lot of money.
This walk is to help better the quality of life for those with bleeding disorders, and WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Facts:
Hemophilia affects less then 19,000 people in the US.
Hemophilia can cost between $100,000-$160,000 a year per person (this is without inhibitors)
Hemophiliac children cannot do what “normal” kids do. They are told not to play contact sports such as soccer, or football, play on monkey bars, or anything that may possibly cause a bruise. They must be overly cautious.
WHY DONATE? Your donations go to helping better the quality of life for those with bleeding disorders. They will help the Hemophilia Foundation of Greater Florida to help fund programs, help families in need, provide MedicAlert for those with this disease, help research new medicines, fund camps for those with bleeding disorders and their families, and provided education about these diseases.
So I challenge you! Can you give up buying fast food for lunch, or Starbucks in the morning, for one day, to donate that $5-$10 you spend to Liam's Walking Warriors? To help us meet our goals, to support this amazing cause?
